Dr. Paula Harvatine practices small animal veterinary medicine part-time at West Salem Veterinary Clinic. She attended Iowa State University’s pre-veterinary medicine program for 3 years before being accepted into the Iowa State University College of Veterinary Medicine. She graduated in 1987 as a member of the Gamma Chapter of the Society of Phi Zeta, the Honor Society of Veterinary Medicine. Dr. Harvatine has special interests in soft tissue surgery, dentistry, and dermatology, specifically outer ear disease. She has a deep bond with animals and is dedicated to being an advocate for their health and well being. She also has empathy and compassion for pet owners as they make decisions about the care of their pets. Providing the best care for a patient is a team effort. Our veterinarians know medicine; people know their pets—it is essential that we work together to provide the best care for the animal.
Dr. Harvatine and her husband, Dr. Mike Huston, became partners of West Salem Veterinary Clinic, Inc. (WSVC) in 1994. In 1999, when their original building lease was up, they built the current facility that houses WSVC.
Dr. Harvatine and Dr. Huston are married with two grown children, Matthew and Katherine, who grew up as WSVC grew. Dr. Harvatine and Dr. Huston would be considered empty nesters by the standards of non-pet owners, however their three Brittany Spaniels, Orion, Luz, and Doc, and cat, Smokey, would beg to differ. When not working, Dr. Harvatine enjoys biking, outdoor activities, and spending time with her amazing family.
Dr. Huston was born and raised in Wisconsin. He completed his undergraduate and Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degrees at Iowa State University.
Dr Huston practices large and small animal medicine, but spends most of his time in dairy production medicine. He completed a three year post graduate course in Dairy Herd Production Management at U.W. Madison.
Dr. Huston is a Heider Center Board Member and an avid supporter of the arts in West Salem. In his free time he enjoys outdoor activities with his wife and the family's three Brittany Spaniels, Orion, Luz, and Doc including hiking, biking, hunting, golfing, and camping. When indoors, he serves as a bed for his cat, Smokey. He enjoys traveling--especially going to visit his two young adult children, Matthew and Katherine.

Dr Theresa Drake is from Iowa City, IA and excited to return to the beautiful Midwest after practicing in Texas for two years. Dr Drake completed her undergraduate education at Oberlin College and Conservatory in 2004. Even before graduating, she
felt her childhood dream of becoming a veterinarian should no longer be ignored, and accordingly shifted her educational and life focus toward the field of science and veterinary medicine. Dr Drake worked as an assistant at the Veterinary Emergency Service of Iowa City for 4 years before moving to Madison WI. In her new home, Dr Drake worked towards her Master's degree in bacteriology while also working in the Leland Allenstein Dairy Teaching Herd. Dr Drake has been a great addition to the West Salem Veterinary Clinic and is developing relationships with our clients and patients.
In her spare time, Dr Drake enjoys hanging out with her husband, Dr Aaron Zimmerman, and their "furkids". Dr Drake continues to play the cello and is a member of the LaCrosse Symphony Orchestra. She can be found many nights busy in the practice room.
